Beauty Is uses physical theater to explore
the underlying emotional reasons people engage in selfdestructive
behavior and to raise awareness about the dangers of crystal
methamphetamine, known as "Tina" in gay communities
across America. The ensemble production features a four-person
cast and is an original work, written, scored and choreographed
by Hotel Obligado ensemble members.

SAINT ANTHONY'S BODY

SAINT ANTHONY?S BODY, the first in Hotel Obligado's
series of "Single Room Projects," is a haunting
portrayal of the struggle between the human spirit and the
body in which it dwells. Based on personal interviews and
research of patients suffering from neurological disorders,
Philadelphia-based actress Dawn Falato draws an indelible
portrait of a woman struggling to regain control of her
suddenly thwarted body. Clare suffers a loss of basic motor
skills after an infection damages some of her most crucial
nerve cells. Like thousands of people with similar disorders,
Clare discovers that her own body is now completely unfamiliar
to her. Even the simple act of turning the pages of a book
must be executed with tremendous effort. In the midst of
Clare's new challenges, an elderly abbot called Anthony
begins appearing to her in visions from the Egyptian desert
of 250 AD. A hermit, Anthony's primary desire is to shed
his earthly body in exchange for the ascension of his own
troubled soul. Saint Anthony's Body premiered at the 2004
Philadelphia Live Arts Festival revealing Falato as "a
major talent" and her performance, "a thing of
beauty." Since then, the show has appeared at the Berkshire
Fringe Festival in Great Barrington, MA.
"Falato's performance - exquisitely detailed, unflinching,
ironic - is a thing of beauty."

DOTTIE.

DOTTIE examines how people suffering from dementia perceive
the world. Robin Marcotte uses original music, mask performance,
aerial work, and shadow dancing, to usher us into a mind overwhelmed
by dementia. Looking into the layers of her different realities,
we are moved by Dottie's resilience, touched by her perseverance
and inspired by her determination to make sense of it all.
The only thing that will be left is to wonder which reality
is hers and which is ours.
Marcotte was inspired to create DOTTIE after uncovering
the fascinating tales surrounding his own grandmother's
quiet battle with dementia. While imaginary friends discovered
in mirrors appear to her, she struggles to keep herself
in a grounded normality. A shy and timid woman transformed
by mental illness, she chases her memories until there is
a new possibility for life.
"The show achieves a singular, and singularly
heartbreaking, power"

PUNCH'S PROGRESS:
A Pulcinella Story
Four hundred years before Don Rickles, Lewis Black and
Krusty the Clown honed their dark and biting brand of
comedy, Pulcinella, the wise-cracking, hump-backed servant
character of the Italian Comedy - Commedia Dell'Arte -
set the bar for comics to come. Join Pulcinella as he
tells of his journey from the fields of Italy, through
his depiction in ballet, his transformation into the puppets
of British Seaside Punch and Judy plays, his trip to America's
vaudeville stage to the night clubs of the Catskills.
Pulcinella's tale is full of dark humor, silly wordplay
and plenty of masks and puppets. Come take the ride with
Pulcinella, the innovator of insult comedy, eccentric
dance and general mayhem!
